Polished stone is glossy and reflective, deepens colour and veining, and shows etches as obvious dull patches. Honed stone is matte and soft, hides etches better but stains a little more readily and can show darker marks. Both finishes etch equally, because finish does not change chemistry. Does honed marble etch less?
No, and this is a common misunderstanding. Honed marble reacts with acid exactly as fast as polished marble. The etch simply shows less, because there is no shine to lose. Over time, though, honed marble near the sink or cooktop can become patchy with a mix of etches and stains. See marble etching explained.
Keeping or changing your finish with film
Most clients match the film to the finish they have: Gloss over polished stone and Matte/Satin over honed, leathered or brushed stone. That keeps the original design intact. But the finish is your choice on any surface. Gloss film can give a honed benchtop a polished look, and Matte/Satin can soften a polished one, without any grinding or polishing of the stone. The protection is the same either way.
