A sculptor's marble in a working kitchen
Statuario comes from the same mountains as Carrara and Calacatta and takes its name from its long history as a sculpting stone. Its appeal is contrast: a very white, fine-grained ground with veins that are darker and more graphic than Calacatta's. The best slabs are cut in sequence and opened like a book so the veining mirrors across a join.
That is what makes Statuario so hard to repair. If a section is badly etched or stained, a restorer has to work on the original slab, and any change in polish across a bookmatched face is obvious. Replacement is rarely an option because the next slab from the block is already somewhere else.
Protecting the whole composition
We plan the film layout around the veining, placing any joins where they are least visible, and finish every edge cleanly. On waterfall islands the film continues over the ends, which are just as exposed to spills running off the top.
