Quick answer
Most dark water rings on marble are just moisture that has soaked into the stone, and they fade as it dries over 24 to 72 hours. Keep the area uncovered with good airflow. White rings are mineral deposits, and pale, dull rings on polished stone are etches from the drink, and each needs a different fix.
First, check what you are dealing with
- Darker ring that looks damp: moisture in the stone. It usually dries out on its own.

Step by step
Identify the ring
Look closely: darker and damp-looking, white and chalky, or pale and dull. Each needs a different fix.
Let dark rings dry
Wipe the surface dry, remove anything covering it and let air move over it. Most dark rings on marble fade within one to three days.
Clean off white deposits
Soften mineral rings with warm water and pH-neutral cleaner, then lift them with a new plastic razor blade held flat.
Deal with what remains
A pale, dull ring that does not change is an etch. Light etches on polished stone can be buffed out with marble polishing powder; see the etching guide.
What not to use on marble
- Vinegar, lemon juice or "natural" citrus cleaners: they etch marble.
- Scourers, steel wool and abrasive creams on a polished surface.
- Mixing cleaning chemicals, especially bleach with anything else.
- Hairdryers or heat, which can drive minerals deeper.
- Descalers on acid-sensitive stone.

Understanding water rings and marks on marble
Marble is moderately porous. A polished, sealed slab slows liquids down, but anything left for a few minutes can still work its way into the surface, and white marbles show every mark.
Marble is almost pure calcite, which dissolves in acid. Lemon, wine, vinegar and many sprays dull a polished surface within seconds to minutes.

On polished marble, a pale or dull ring left by a glass is almost always an etch from the drink, not water. A darker ring on honed marble is usually moisture and dries out.
